Did you know that Cook County has an official flower? It's known as the Purple Coneflower and it is native to our area. The Chicago Botanic Garden has recently created a hybrid of this flower to make one that is salmon-colored.
What does the County do?
Cook County is a unit of government that represents 5.1 million people! The area includes Chicago and many suburbs — (137 municipalities outside the City of Chicago) Its primary responsibilities include operating our court system, the cook county jail, maintaining 68,000 acres of forest preserve and providing healthcare to those in financial need through four hospitals and 30 satellite clinics. Cook County has an annual budget of $3 billion.
More interesting facts: On August 10, 1833, one and one-half years after Cook County was created (Jan. 15, 1831), the frontier settlement of Fort Dearborn was incorporated as the town of Chicago.
